Planning a train journey? Understanding ticket status, seat availability and different booking classes can help you choose the right option for your trip.
RAC stands for Reservation Against Cancellation. An RAC ticket allows you to board the train and travel even though a fully confirmed berth has not been allotted at the time of booking.
Initially, RAC passengers may be allotted a seat or shared berth. If confirmed berths become available due to cancellations or other changes, RAC passengers may get a confirmed berth according to railway allocation rules.
A Confirmed (CNF) ticket means your reservation has been confirmed and a berth or seat is allotted to you. Your ticket may show details such as coach number and berth number after the reservation or chart preparation process.
Depending on the selected class and coach, the allotted berth can be Lower, Middle, Upper, Side Lower or Side Upper.
A Waiting List ticket means a confirmed berth is not currently available for your booking. Your position is represented by a waiting-list number such as WL 12.
The status can change when other passengers cancel their tickets or when additional seats or berths become available. Depending on the final status and applicable railway rules, a waiting-list booking may be confirmed or move to RAC.
Indian trains offer different travel classes depending on the train and route. Common classes include First AC (1A), AC 2 Tier (2A), AC 3 Tier (3A), Sleeper Class (SL), AC Chair Car (CC) and Second Sitting (2S).
Facilities, seating arrangements, bedding, privacy and comfort can vary by class and train. Availability of a particular class also depends on the selected train.
In sleeper and AC coaches, passengers may receive different berth positions depending on availability and allocation.
Berth allocation is subject to availability and applicable reservation rules.
Your reservation status can change before the journey. Railway reservation charts are prepared before departure, and the status shown after chart preparation represents the final reservation position for the booking.
Passengers should check their ticket details, train number, journey date, boarding station, coach and berth information before starting their journey.
